Parking and T-Lane Rules in New Zealand

When renting a vehicle from Blue Dot Rentals, it’s important to understand the local parking and transit lane (T-lane) rules to avoid fines and ensure a smooth journey. Here's a quick guide to help you:

Parking Rules

  • Park Legally:
Only park where permitted by signs or road markings. Always check for clear signs indicating parking restrictions.
  • Observe Time Limits:
Many parking spaces have a time limit (e.g., P60 = 60 minutes parking). Always respect the posted time limits.
  • Pay for Parking:
Some areas require payment via parking meters or pay-by-app services. Always check and pay if required.
  • No Parking on Yellow Lines:
Solid yellow lines or broken yellow lines along the kerb mean no parking or stopping at any time.
  • Do Not Block Driveways:
Never park across private driveways, building entrances, or emergency exits.
  • Parking Facing the Road Direction:
You must park in the same direction as the traffic flow on your side of the street.
  • Mobility Parking Spaces:
Only park in mobility (disabled) spaces if you have a valid permit displayed.
  • Loading Zones:
Loading zones are for active loading or unloading only. These are time-restricted and often reserved for commercial use.
  • Bus Stops and Taxi Stands:
Do not park in bus stops, taxi stands, or cycle lanes at any time unless permitted.
  • After Hours Rules:
Some restrictions (like clearways) apply only during certain hours. Always check signs carefully.

T-Lane (Transit Lane) Rules

  • What Are T-Lanes?
T2 or T3 lanes are transit lanes reserved for vehicles carrying multiple people to encourage carpooling and ease traffic.
  • T2 Lane:
Vehicles must carry at least two people (driver + 1 passenger) to use a T2 lane.
  • T3 Lane:
Vehicles must carry at least three people (driver + 2 passengers) to use a T3 lane.
  • Motorcycles and Buses:
Motorcycles, buses, and bicycles are usually allowed to use T-lanes even if only carrying one person.
  • Operating Hours:
Transit lanes are often only active during peak hours (e.g., 7–9 AM and 4–6 PM weekdays). Outside these hours, anyone can use the lane. Always check the signs!
  • Heavy Fines Apply:
Driving illegally in a transit lane without the correct number of occupants can result in significant fines.
  • Clear Signage:
T-lanes are clearly marked with T2 or T3 signs along the road and overhead.
  • Emergency Vehicles:
Emergency services can use transit lanes at any time, regardless of the number of occupants.
