All prices are in New Zealand dollars and include GST. The $1,500 bond is fully refundable and returned around 30 days after the vehicle comes back, subject to our terms. Fuel, tolls, parking and traffic infringements remain the driver’s responsibility.
Insurance & liability
Your excess, and how to reduce it
Every Blue Dot Rentals vehicle comes with insurance cover. The excess is the maximum you would pay towards damage — and you can buy it down to zero at the start of your hire.

Excess reduction is chosen at the start of the hire and charged once per rental. Reduction does not cover tyres, windscreens, undercarriage, water damage or breaches of the rental agreement — see our full terms for detail.

Long term car rental FAQs
What is the minimum long term rental period?
Thirty days. Long term rates apply from 30 days onward, and the rate drops further at three months or more. Anything shorter is quoted on our standard rental rates.
How much does a long term car rental cost in New Zealand?
Our long term rentals start from $449 per 30 days — around $105 a week — for an entry-level hatchback, GST inclusive. Larger vehicles, unlimited mileage and excess reduction are priced on top. Call 09 971 1449 for a fixed quote on your term.
How many kilometres are included?
Every long term hire includes 50 km per day. Additional kilometres are charged at $1 per km. If you expect to drive more than about 50 km a day on average, unlimited mileage at $15 per day usually works out cheaper — we will do the maths with you before you sign.
How much is the bond, and when do I get it back?
The refundable bond is $1,500. It is returned around 30 days after you bring the vehicle back, less any charges owing under the rental agreement.
What is the insurance excess and can I reduce it?
The standard excess is $4,600, and it is the same for restricted NZ licence holders, overseas licence holders and drivers under 21. You can reduce it at the start of the hire: $500 brings it down to $2,000, $750 brings it down to $1,000, and $1,000 removes it entirely for zero excess.
Can I add another driver?
Yes. Additional drivers are $1 per day each. Every driver must be named on the agreement and present a valid licence before they drive.
Is servicing and maintenance included?
Yes. Routine servicing, WOF, registration and 24/7 roadside assistance are all included for the length of your hire. Fuel, tolls, parking and traffic infringements are the driver’s responsibility — though an unlimited toll pass is available for $10.
Can I use an overseas driver licence?
Yes. We accept overseas licences with an English translation or an International Driving Permit where one is required. Bring your licence, passport or photo ID and a payment method to pick-up.
Can I extend or change vehicles part-way through?
Extensions can be arranged any time before your return date — just get in touch before the term ends. Swapping to a different vehicle is possible subject to availability.
Do you deliver the vehicle?
Delivery and pick-up are available in the Auckland area on request. Elsewhere, collect from your nearest branch in Wellington, Christchurch or Queenstown.
